ANALYSIS OF SPACE-TIME VARIABILITY OF THE PLATA RIVER PLUME Gayana
Piola,Alberto R.; Romero,Silvia I..
Satellite ocean colour data from the Sea-Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor are analyzed to monitor the space-time variability of the Plata river plume over the continental shelf and slope. SeaWiFS Chlorophyll-a (CSAT) product is used to understand the nature of changes in the colour of waters and how this relates to variations in wind direction and river outflow. We use a 5-year data set (1998-2002) of Global Area Coverage monthly mean composites. The analysis of CSAT data reveals strong seasonal variability over the continental shelf with maximum northeastward penetrations in the austral winter (June to August). The plume may reach ~27S, about 1000 km northeast of the Plata estuary. In summer the plume is confined to south of 32°S and the Plata...

Atmospheric Corrections and Multi-Conditional Algorithm for Multi-Sensor Remote Sensing of Suspended Particulate Matter in Low-to-High Turbidity Levels Coastal Waters ArchiMer
Novoa, Stefani; Doxaran, David; Ody, Anouck; Vanhellemont, Quinten; Lafon, Virginie; Lubac, Bertrand; Gernez, Pierre.
The accurate measurement of suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations in coastal waters is of crucial importance for ecosystem studies, sediment transport monitoring, and assessment of anthropogenic impacts in the coastal ocean. Ocean color remote sensing is an efficient tool to monitor SPM spatio-temporal variability in coastal waters. However, near-shore satellite images are complex to correct for atmospheric effects due to the proximity of land and to the high level of reflectance caused by high SPM concentrations in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions. The water reflectance signal ((w)) tends to saturate at short visible wavelengths when the SPM concentration increases. Using a comprehensive dataset of high-resolution satellite...

Atmospherically-promoted photosynthetic activity in a well-mixed ecosystem: Significance of wet deposition events of nitrogen compounds ArchiMer
Boulart, C; Flament, Pierre; Gentilhomme, V; Deboudt, K; Migon, C; Lizon, F; Schapira, M; Lefebvre, Alain.
Wet atmospheric deposition of dissolved N, P and Si species is studied in well-mixed coastal ecosystem to evaluate its potential to stimulate photosynthetic activities in nutrient-depleted conditions. Our results show that, during spring, seawater is greatly depleted in major nutrients: Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN), Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus (DIP) and Silicic acid (Si), in parallel with an increase of phytoplanktonic biomass. In spring (March-May) and summer (June-September), wet atmospheric deposition is the predominant source (> 60%, relative to riverine contribution) for nitrates and ammonium inputs to this N-limited coastal ecosystem. During winter (October-February), riverine inputs of DIN predominate (> 80%) and are annually the most...

Climate Variability and Oceanographic Settings Associated with Interannual Variability in the Initiation of Dinophysis acuminata Blooms ArchiMer
Diaz, Patricio A.; Reguera, Beatriz; Ruiz-villarreal, Manuel; Pazos, Yolanda; Velo-suarez, Lourdes; Berger, Henrick; Sourisseau, Marc.
In 2012, there were exceptional blooms of D. acuminata in early spring in what appeared to be a mesoscale event affecting Western Iberia and the Bay of Biscay. The objective of this work was to identify common climatic patterns to explain the observed anomalies in two important aquaculture sites, the Galician R as Baixas (NW Spain) and Arcachon Bay (SW France). Here, we examine climate variability through physical-biological couplings, Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies and time of initiation of the upwelling season and its intensity over several decades. In 2012, the mesoscale features common to the two sites were positive anomalies in SST and unusual wind patterns. These led to an atypical predominance of upwelling in winter in the Galician R as,...

Contribution de l''etude des suspensions a la comprehension des mecanismes hydrosedimentaires estuariens et littoraux en Manche centrale et orientale ArchiMer
Dupont, J; Lafite, R; Lamboy, M.
Satellite imagery shows the turbid and thermal plume of the Seine River and littoral zone of Picardie and Haute-Normandie. The suspensions have been analysed in conformity with a strategy elaborated in 1985 by the authors. In this macrotidal coastal environment they have attempted to draw the dynamic specificities and the material characteristics.

Coupling physical and biogeochemical processes in the Rio de la Plata plume ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Dadou, Isabelle; Dumas, Franck; Lazure, Pascal; Garcon, Véronique.
A coupled three-dimensional physical-biogeochemical model was developed in order to simulate the ecological functioning of the Rio de la Plata estuary and plume. The biogeochemical model reproduces the nitrogen cycle between five compartments: dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus and dissolved organic nitrogen. The coupling is tested in seasonal climatological configurations and for the particular year 1999. The circulation is forced with Parana and Uruguay rivers discharges, NCEP wind and tide. The biogeochemical model includes loads of inorganic and organic nitrogen from both rivers. The model reproduces the correct tidal amplitudes in the estuary, as well as the most outstanding features of the observed horizontal and...

Etude des transports de matieres en suspension en Manche par l''emploi de l'imagerie CZCS ArchiMer
Thomas, Y.
The suspended matter distribution in Channel surface waters during 1981 have been obtained by the interpretation of radiometer recording (Coastal zone Color Scanner working on Nimbus 7 satellite). After imagery calibration and calculation of suspended matter concentration using algorithm from in situ measurements, the maps interpretation allows the study of: (1) resuspension of infratidal fluvial particles by swells and tides; (2) characterizing of intertidal zone given estuarine material by erosion; (3) determination of river plume limits with regard to Seine flow rate; (4) calculation and modeling of solid load; (5) estimation of suspended particles masses and volumes to strike the balance; (6) differentiation of hydrobiological behaviors in Western and...

Evolution de la complexation des metaux (Ca, Mg, Cd, Pb et Cu) dans l''estuaire de la Seine ArchiMer
Fischer, J; Wartel, M.
Interaction between metallic ions and dissolved organic matter can take major part in the biogeochemical cycle of metals in the aquatic environment. The authors point out copper behavior by the study of complexing capacity of surface and bottom waters. A systematic analysis of major elements in natural waters has allowed for a proposal of geographical distribution of metals.

Hydrographical variability on the French continental shelf in the Bay of Biscay, during the 1990s ArchiMer
Puillat, Ingrid; Lazure, Pascal; Jegou, Anne-marie; Lampert, Luis; Miller, P.
A synthesis of 9 years of hydrographic measurements, acquired during approximately 25 cruises (1992-2000) on the French continental shelf of the Bay of Biscay, is presented. The main focus is upon salinity distribution, as it is little known in this area. The whole of the data set covers I I months of the year, with some sampling fields repeated several times a year, for multiple years. This time-series allows temperature and salinity distributions to be studied together with their seasonal, inter-annual and mesoscale variability. The seasonal trend in temperature can be described in three stages, which are in agreement with past studies. Thermal stratification occurs between May and mid-September in a layer similar to 50 m in thickness, whereas the...

Potential of High Spatial and Temporal Ocean Color Satellite Data to Study the Dynamics of Suspended Particles in a Micro-Tidal River Plume ArchiMer
Ody, Anouck; Doxaran, David; Vanhellemont, Quinten; Nechad, Bouchra; Novoa, Stefani; Many, Gael; Bourrin, Francois; Verney, Romaric; Pairaud, Ivane; Gentili, Bernard.
Ocean color satellite sensors are powerful tools to study and monitor the dynamics of suspended particulate matter (SPM) discharged by rivers in coastal waters. In this study, we test the capabilities of Landsat-8/Operational Land Imager (OLI), AQUA&TERRA/Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and MSG-3/Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) sensors in terms of spectral, spatial and temporal resolutions to (i) estimate the seawater reflectance signal and then SPM concentrations and (ii) monitor the dynamics of SPM in the Rhone River plume characterized by moderately turbid surface waters in a micro-tidal sea. Consistent remote-sensing reflectance (Rrs) values are retrieved in the red spectral bands of these four satellite...
